Dillon
* * *
After I took Sophia home, I spent a little time laying on my back and transporting myself back in time. I thought about high-school Dillon, the guy whoâd lain on this very bed for years, wishing he had the guts to go next door and win over the girl. And now Iâd done it.
Thinking about Sophia was complicated, but in the very best way. All the things Iâd loved back then were still there, but adult Sophia was more outspoken, more confident, and if it was possible, even more beautiful than my teenage crush had been. And the weird thing about knowing someone your whole life, and loving them like a sibling for most of it, was that the lines between lust, infatuation, and real feelings that lasted were completely blurred. Iâd loved Sophia Whittington most of my lifeâif not because we were dating, then just because she was practically family. And having her wrapped in my arms with her hands on me? It was hard not to feel like that tender familial love could slide pretty easily into a whole other kind of love.
When weâd been kissing in the car, thereâd been a moment when Sophia had pulled back and looked at me with a strange gleam in her eye, and the words had been on the tip of my tongue.
What would she have thought? If Iâd blurted out âI love youâ on what was actually our first date?
My phone chimed on my nightstand, and I held it over my face, not wanting to move too much for fear of breaking the happy daze I was in.
TheGirlNextDoor: Thanks so much for tonight. I had a great time.
Me: I did too. When can I see you again?
TheGirlNextDoor: Well, if you come to your window you can see me right now.
I didnât waste any time sliding off my bed and yanking the curtain on my window to the side. My room didnât face Sophiaâs, but the guest room in her house lined up with my window, and she was standing there now in a tank top and tiny shorts, smiling across the yard at me. My heart seized and then sputtered in my chest as the rest of me tensed. She was so amazing. It took every ounce of self control I had not to tear through the window and dash across the yard to reach her.
She smiled shyly and waved to me, and I waved back, suddenly realizing I was shirtless. I flexed a bit, hoping she wouldnât think I was a slouch. Iâd always worked out, but now I felt like I had a real reason to make sure things looked good.
My phone was still in my hand, and as Sophia bent over her own phone across the way, it chimed.
TheGirlNextDoor: I need to tell you something.
My stomach dropped a tiny bit. Weâd barely had one night of bliss. Whatever it was, I didnât want to know. I didnât want anything to ruin the way I felt right now.
